HISTORY

Today, Macsteel Service Centers USA is one of the leading metals processors and distributors in North America. That achievement didn’t occur by happenstance but rather through a well-planned approach of growth by acquisition and by adding value for our customers.

Macsteel Service Centers USA presence in North America came to be in 1983 and 1985 when South African-based holding company, Macsteel acquired a major US-headquartered group – Ferro Union, a large steel warehousing and processing operation, and Associated Metals and Minerals Corp., a worldwide trading organization with offices in the major steel source and supply markets. In 1995, Macsteel acquired Usinor’s Edgcomb Metals service center group and joined the two companies, Edgcomb and Ferro under the umbrella name Macsteel Service Centers USA. Acquisitions continued in 2001 and 2002, with the purchase of the assets of Bellesteel and the acquisition of Baldwin Steel from Duferco. The acquisition of structural steel specialist Regal Steel Supply from Corus was completed in 2003.

On January 1, 2004, all of the operating entities began operating as one powerhouse under the name Macsteel Service Centers USA. In February, 2004 Hokin-Katz, a well-established flat-roll processor located in Los Angeles was purchased and brought under the Macsteel Service Centers umbrella. More recently, in the latter part of 2005, Alpha Steel and Alpha Processing Inc., heavy gauge steel processors based in Chicago, became the newest members of the Macsteel Service Centers USA family.

While growth often leads to change and flux, one Macsteel Service Centers USA trait remains rock steady: our passion for a job well done. In 2006, we affirmed this passion to our customers and employees by formally adopting the Principles of Passion, a set of ethical standards by which Macsteel Service Centers USA has and will continue to conduct business throughout the world.
